"Changing the way luxury products are sold has been a key to success for Daniel Thomas, who has used a mix of ecommerce and competitively priced products to establish his DanZ hot tub and spa retail business"
He says: ‘Our top model retails for £4,750. The same product in a High Street showroom would sell for £7,800.
‘With those savings we can attract customers with the money to spend on a luxury hot tub who want a better deal – and those who have always wanted one but felt they couldn’t afford it."
"Daniel Thomas, 23, launched hot tub site Danz.co.uk five years ago and has since managed to grow his business into the UK’s largest online hot tub retailer. Starting as a one man band in 2006 Daniel has grown the Nottingham-based firm to four employees and expects to turn over more than £1 million this year. "
Q: Entrepreneurship - skill, luck, or a bit of both? A: Neither – it’s all about passion. If you’re passionate about your idea you will learn whatever skills you need to to make it work, you create your own luck.
Q: When recruiting staff would you look for a degree or experience? A: We are a small business and resources are tight so everyone has to add value. We don’t have much time to train people and from that perspective, it’s a lot easier for us to employ someone who is experienced and understands the way the world works. For me the main thing I look for in a prospective employee is passion. I’d much prefer a graduate who is passionate about making an impact, than someone who is experienced and content with doing no more than the bare minimum.and those who have always wanted one but felt they couldn’t afford it."
Hot tub entrepreneur helping business brains of the future – His work with Model Behaviour takes him into primary schools in deprived areas such as Radford and Hyson Green to raise aspirations.
And through Young Enterprise he talks to secondary school pupils, getting them to think about their futures and teaching "financial intelligence" such as budgeting and how to write a cheque.
He tells them about his business, his academic history and the people he hung around with at school.
Daniel believes youngsters are forced to make decisions about their future long before they have any idea what careers entail.
I've been working with a local charity and regularly give speeches on how to run businesses to school children from deprived areas. My dream would be to make enough money to give back to the community in a way that would make a real difference.
“The business was going well but selling higher-value items made me realise I needed a long-term plan and my own website,” he says. “I looked at the hot tub market and I saw the opportunity to shake it up with a business that offered customers better-value products and a more reliable and comprehensive service too.” Danz’s range of tubs, which cost from £2,000 to £5,000, all come with a five-year warranty and Thomas, who employs three people, has also built up a national network of independent engineers. His market of mainly 30 to 60-year-olds spans all income brackets.

Daniel Thomas, now 23, launched his online hot tub and spa site Danz.co.uk five years ago. He has grown the business organically to become the market leader in the UK, predicting a turnover of more than £1m this year. Here, the young entrepreneur shares how he first got started in business, his smartest decisions, plans for the future and growth secrets.
Business has been growing steadily and already this year we've turned over more than £500,000, something I'm extremely proud of.
Whilst it's nice to be able to generate your own income there are plenty of other things that motivate me more than money. Having grown up with a lot of people who've made bad decisions in their life I'm determined to help give back to the Nottingham community. Hopefully my experiences can help others which for me is the ultimate reward.
